Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is strong, resilient to heat, fire and chemical damage as well as being plentiful and relatively cheap. Unusually, it is a fibrous mineral made up of bundles of fibres which can be broken up into finer fibres. Asbestos has been used in over a thousand different products from asbestos insulating boards, thermal insulation, fire blankets to toilet cisterns and seats.

Unfortunately, if materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, tiny fibres can be released into the air. If these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything.

Due to the health hazards caused by inhalation of asbestos fibres, its usage and sale was banned in many countries including the UK. Having been mined for over 4000 years coupled with the multitude of uses, the UK like many countries has a widespread asbestos problem.

The HSE warns that asbestos can be found in any building built before the year 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc.) and causes around 5000 deaths every year.

Identification & Sampling
